Vallée de Joux Watchmaking Museum Revitalization Project 2012
An innovative project for the revitalization of the Joux Valley Watchmaking Museum will be launched in 2012.
The Espace Horloger Foundation has decided to modernize and revitalize its museum in order to further enhance the value of its exceptional watchmaking heritage and collections, which are unique worldwide.
This project, for which a preliminary study was funded by the Paul-Edouard Piguet Foundation, was conceived and designed by Vincent Jaton (www.concepteur.ch) with the stated aim of developing a modular facility that is fully integrated into its region and Canton, but also having an international vocation. The project is both outward-looking and multi-generational.
Conceived as something more than a museum, the aim of the Espace Horloger will be to offer not only a presentation of the watchmaking art in the Joux Valley, but also to become a true platform for watchmaking know-how and expertise in related trades. It should also be noted that this is the only watchmaking museum in the Canton of Vaud open to the public and, as such, it is the showcase of the watchmaking heritage of an entire region.
After discovering the trades that have shaped watchmaking, the visitor will learn about the watchmaking prowess of the Joux Valley and the mechanical marvels that have been created there. The objective is to develop a facility for teaching, education and fun that will allow different generations to come together and share their knowledge, while at the same time discovering the unusual history of the inhabitants of this valley, known as "les Combiers", its watchmaking farms and the men who made the reputation of this region.
The visitor will then be able to explore all the trades of the watchmaking industry, as well as those of micromechanics and jewellery. Temporary exhibitions will be staged several times a year in addition to the Museum's permanent collection. In the History section, particular importance will be given to the security of the timepieces on display. This will enable the museum to organize exceptional exhibitions featuring authentic watchmaking jewels and thus to receive objects on loan from other museums and private individuals.
The aim of this project is to underline the central role of the Joux Valley in the Jura watchmaking region and to modernize a cultural facility in order to offer a true reflection of its exceptional watchmaking heritage. The museum will provide opportunities for the general public and for young people in particular to discover all of its wealth. That is the challenge that the Espace Horloger Foundation has taken up!
