The Municipality of l’Abbaye
The Municipality of l’Abbaye was founded in 1571 and is composed of three villages: L’Abbaye, Le Pont and Les Bioux, which have each got their own administration (executive and legislative).
L’Abbaye is the only municipality in Vallée de Joux that does not adjoin France. This makes people say that it’s where our locals, the so-called Combiers, are the ones in Vallée de Joux with the strongest cantonal – Vaudois - temper.
Vallée de Joux was a long time considered as an isolated region, far away from everything. However, L’Abbaye is only a 35 minutes’ drive from Lausanne, via Le Col du Mollendruz, and near the motorway leading to Vallorbe.
Today, many tourists visit our valley and admire the magnificent landscape with its lakes and mountain crests. L’Abbaye Sailing Centre as well as the little rowboat and pedal-boat rental in Le Pont give pleasure to both beginners and water-sport specialists. Many are the sporting possibilities; Le Pont is a good starting point for different hikes and walks, for example the ones leading round Lac Brenet, up Dent-de-Vaulion or to Le Sentier along either side of Lac de Joux.
The Municipality of l’Abbaye is also known for its gastronomy. Among other delicacies you will find fish from the lake, prepared all year round in any of the restaurants by the lake.
