L'Orient

L’Orient is one the villages of the Municipality of Le Chenit. Its name comes from the fact that it is situated on the “oriental” side of Lac de Joux.

High-class watchmaking is established in L’Orient, as in most of the villages in Vallée de Joux.

A part from watchmaking, singing has got an important place in L’Orient. A choir was founded in 1881. The villagers thought that it was important to meet regularly in order to maintain solidarity and friendship. In 1891 a mixed choir was founded to “please the women” and not leave them alone at home while their husbands were out singing.

Agriculture is another important activity in L’Orient. As a matter of fact, the farmers have always been enterprising and dynamic.

In the sixties, the running of the river Orbe was modified in order to give more good soil to the villages of Le Sentier and L’Orient and set limits to the marsh. Besides, this river is the only border between Le Sentier and L’Orient, which makes its evolution important to the villagers.
